Waiting for the Answer

So far so good here in New Jersey. There was a good crowd at the polling place when DH and I went to vote at around 11 a.m. - and a friend of ours who is a challenger said that there were lines early this morning and there had already been more people there than usually vote all day.

I was distributing literature (a legal distance from the polls of course!) at another location, and they had had a huge turnout as well. The people we were approaching were overwhelmingly voting for the Democrats. But of course in New Jersey this isn't surprising.

I'm more concerned about the swing states - and hear there are substantial problems in some of the key locations. Strange how this always happens, isn't it? Maybe not so strange. Well we can't put up with this again! Let's hope enough people voted early and enough people are willing to stand in lines when machines break down, and that no one is denied their right to vote!

Yes, let's hope.

There were problems with voting in places, but all's well that ends well.

(BTW, a good friend from childhood grew up in Bogota, N.J., and I had relatives who for many years lived in Bloomfield.)

I think this is a good time to fight for full voting rights and against voter suppression. No one can accuse liberals of sour grapes.

Reading this post after the results are in, I can relive the tension and unbearable anxiety I was feeling last night before we knew the results. I was pretty sure Obama would win, but there were too many nagging doubts.

What if there really were millions of voters who said they were for Obama but would vote for McCain at the last minute? What if Diebold rigged all the machines? What if those dirty tricks (robocalls, tricking people into voting on Wednesday November 5th, intimidating voters at the polls) actually worked on millions of voters?

The tension was unbearable. Whew!

We should be meticulous and perceptive in all the advice we give. We should be extraordinarily painstaking in giving guidance that we would not think of following ourselves. Most of all, we ought to refrain from giving advisor which we don't follow when it damages those who woo assume us at our word.

To be a adroit charitable being is to procure a kind of openness to the world, an skill to group uncertain things beyond your own restrain, that can take you to be shattered in uncommonly exceptional circumstances pro which you were not to blame. That says something remarkably weighty with the fettle of the ethical autobiography: that it is based on a conviction in the unpredictable and on a willingness to be exposed; it's based on being more like a spy than like a jewel, something somewhat tenuous, but whose very particular attractiveness is inseparable from that fragility.
