Thanksgiving Tradition

While I'm sitting here waiting for DH's parents to arrive, I am also waiting for the radio to play "Alice's Restaurant" at noon. It isn't Thanksgiving without it!

In case you miss hearing it on your own radio, here is a link to Arlo Guthrie singing "Alice's Restaurant" at the Guthrie Center in 2005. I guess his performances are copyrighted because there is no embed code provided.

Over at Firedog Lake they posted the scene from the movie which shows Arlo about 40 years younger than he is in this video. It gets better with every year he performs it.

We've gone to see Arlo several times and have seen him perform "Alice" in person. There's nothing like going to one of his concerts - it's not just the music, it's the stories he tells, that make them so memorable.

The most amazing concert we went to was at Carnegie Hall a few years ago for his "Arlo and Friends" Thanksgiving concert. Not only did he perform, but the remaining members of the Weavers, including Pete Seeger, performed, as did Peter, Paul and Mary, Richie Havens, and a plethora of other folk music greats.

If I were making up a new list of things I've done in my life, I'd add "Seeing Arlo Guthrie perform 'Alice's Restaurant' in person" to the list.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, everyone!

I recorded Arlo live some years back and, after a peculiar look, he was gracious enough to autograph the tape label.

You're right, it's a wonderful experience everyone should have.

Wow, what a perfect Thanksgiving song! Saw him live in the early '80's & loved how he stopped & talked about the songs. He did a great story about "Git Along Little Doggies" that had the audience laughing & crying at same time (what's with this "doggies" business, they aren't doggies, no one pets them or plays ball with them or grooms them, and doggies don't end up on the grill).

Caught him live again many, many years later, this time with his kids up on stage with him, daughter playing fiddle/violin. Very cool to pass along the family musical tradition.

I've been thinking about his father, Woody, a lot lately ... I guess because of depression economics.

Happy T-G to the Maui family!

I can't listen right now--I'll try to get to it tomorrow--but I did want to be sure to say Happy Thanksgiving. (And Smokey sends sniffs to Diva.)

Happy day! I never saw Arlo in his heyday. I was a bit young. But via Youtube, I can check him out.

I have never seen Arlo, but I loved my LP of Alice's Restaurant that I had back in the day.

Today I listened to the same thing - I loved it!

Happy Thanksgiving.

Caught Arlo in a small local performance hall, he had the crowd doing rain sounds with clapping & finger snapping. What a guy.....

Alice's restaurant is a classic for T day.

Come by to read about Buy Nothing Day on Friday.

Ah yes, Alice's Restaurant. I also liked "City of New Orleans" and the one (I forget the title) about flying into an airport and "bringing in a couple of keys...don't check my bags if you please, Mr. Customs Man."

Ms. Fairway, yes, it will go through your head for days! I'm still humming it.

Kevin, hope yours was great!

Dave, that's great you got Arlo to autograph your bootleg tape!

DK, glad you had the opportunity to see him! I've been thinking about Woody a lot too for the same reasons.

Utah, thanks, and I agree - lots of anticipation for this new year!

Kuanyin, thanks! If it wasn't for my job I'd never have an up-to-date computer!

Ruth, hope Smokey had a good Turkey Day. Diva got ahold of some cheese but I got it away from her...she had so much fun seeing the family that she slept for a whole day afterward! She sends greetings to Smokey!

Quaker Dave, thanks, and you too!

Rhea, he's even better now than when he was young, so enjoy the video!

FranIam, glad you were enjoying Arlo today too!

Fran, I bought nothing on Buy Nothing Day, so I behaved! I did, however, buy a pair of boots today but I needed them.

Tom, yes, I loved City of New Orleans. And Mr. Customs Man too. He sang that at the last concert of his we went to, plus he led up to it with a great story about a plane trip he took, stoned. Hilarious!
