Bill Maher Pretty Much Sums Up This Country's Problem: Teh Stupid

H/T to Lisa for posting this link on Facebook.

Here is the link to the article on the Huffington Post.

Maher goes through all the absurdities that many Americans believe and what they don't know, and then says,

"And these are the idiots we want to weigh in on the minutia of health care policy? Please, this country is like a college chick after two Long Island Iced Teas: we can be talked into anything, like wars, and we can be talked out of anything, like health care. We should forget town halls, and replace them with study halls. There's a lot of populist anger directed towards Washington, but you know who concerned citizens should be most angry at? Their fellow citizens. "Inside the beltway" thinking may be wrong, but at least it's thinking, which is more than you can say for what's going on outside the beltway."

He makes a lot of great points in this diatribe, and ends with the truth:

"Until we admit there are things we don't know, we can't even start asking the questions to find out. Until we admit that America can make a mistake, we can't stop the next one. A smart guy named Chesterton once said: "My country, right or wrong is a thing no patriot would ever think of saying... It is like saying 'My mother, drunk or sober.'" To which most Americans would respond: "Are you calling my mother a drunk?"

Go Bill! He nails it. This is one reason it is so frustrating right now for all of us on the left. We know Obama has better ideas and good intentions; but the stupidity of much of the American people and of a lot of Congressmen, sad to say, (to say nothing of the obstreperousness of the right) is preventing him from realizing his vision. Instead he has to tiptoe around contentious issues, compromise on what he'd really want to do, and try to make everything acceptable to everyone. Maybe he should be a bit more like Lyndon Johnson and shove things down America's throat because it's good for them, and not worry about whether he'll be re-elected.

The health care debate, unfortunately, speaks to a lot of prejudices and misinformation that has been confused as wisdom for a really long time.

We as Americans think individually and feel that we are entitled to certain things. If we were Kindergarten students, the teacher would write, "Does not want to share with others" on our report card. Until we can think for the common good and not just our own little kingdom, we'll always run into major problems.

Comrade,
Half our population does not want to share with others, and does not play fair with others. Infintile Right Wing cry babies.

Maui,
Maher was right when he said Obama should be more like Bush; as in pressing issues from his bully pulpit. Americans cannot be trusted to seek information. They need to literally be force fed facts. Fox knows this well, and unfortunately there is no media to counter Fox propaganda, apart from three under-viewed MSNBC shows.

NOoooooooooooo not more like BUSH-- more like Johnson.

My biggest fear is we get this awful watered down version of a health care bill.

I am also freaking out about the gazillions of dollars
health care & big pharma are stuffing into the pockets of the legislative deciders.

Is that not a conflict of interest?
Clearly people in medical bankruptcy or on the brink of it can't compete.

All that cash flowing is, to me, a blatant ethics violation.
No way that much money will not have an influence on their vote.

I'll find a link & send it your way...

There are no misunderstandings here on the part of those instigating all this crap. This will not stop until Republicans succeed in instigating the 2nd Revolution they have called for and will blame on Obama. This will not be good!

I think this post is grounds for legal proceedings into treason.

I think he is trying to push his agenda through.. but you have to have help from Congress and he isn't getting it... we have a bunch of cowardly democrats who won't back him up.. Look at the mess they made of GitMo.. He wanted it fixed.. they voted to slow him down.. How is that standing with him in any way.. The Recovery or Stimulus, they hemmed and hawed and messed with it until it ended up so watered down it was pathetic and everyone blamed it on Nancy Pelosi.. Well it could have been much worse.. But our Congress isn't helping him I don't believe.. They seem to be fighting him as much or more than helping him.

obama is too much of a technocrat - and in many ways like bill clinton - tries to have everyone like him

problem is this country is so divided with one side more intent on winning than fixing problems --

and i cannot figure out why he cannot see it --- sometimes i think all his posturing and lack of forcefulness about 2012 already

of course it is

My biggest concern is the government wanting to do things right and as they evolve going back on their word and changing things so they are not what they started out to be and a simple example how social security has evolved we know it was meant to be supplemental and never cost us as much as it does today. And why won't congress guarantee us they will also have the same health care and give up their current plan as well. I would feel much better if we all would have the same opportunity including our lawmakers who represent us Obama's plan may start out great however he is only there for two terms at the most what happens when he leave...
