Tonight's the Night

I haven't seen so much hype about a debate since Nixon-Kennedy. (Well, actually I don't remember how much hype there was before Nixon-Kennedy since I was only 7, but I imagine there must have been a lot since it was the first televised debate. Of course, back then, they didn't even know how to hype - so let's just forget this analogy, OK?)

Anyway, the fierce focus on this VP debate is getting me worried. All Sarah Palin has to do is show up and still be standing at the end and not collapsed into a babbling heap, and she'll be declared the winner. Biden, in the meantime, has to come off as knowledgeable but nice, and not say anything stupid (as he is sometimes wont to do). I think his job will be harder.

To amuse you in the meantime, here is a fun toy - The Sarah Palin Quote Generator. It will give you wonderful quotes that Sarah Palin hasn't said - YET. Let's see if she comes up with any of them tonight. Here are a few examples:

"What I think Americans at the end of the day are going to be able to go back and look at also bipartisan effort at a crisis time like this."

"And as Ronald Reagan believed that the impact — we have got to have all options out there on the table."

"The way that I have understood the world is the leadership qualities — that's paramount."

Have fun watching tonight - we'll be at a debate-watching party so will report back on what people thought of her debating skills afterward!

I predict it won't be a particularly memorable debate. Both will be on a short leash and make safe, predictable, dull statements. It won't be a net gain for either candidate.

I love the quote generator.

I have absolutely no idea what to expect from the debate.

I'm still sad from 2004 when Cheney didn't reveal his true, biomechanical, human flesh-eating nature during the debate with Edwards, so I bet nothing exciting happens tonight either. Dammit.

Those quotes are too funny. Sad thing is, she gets away with saying stuff just that dumb and disjointed in reality. Or she just responds to a question by reeling off a memorized talking point instead of trying to answer. Makes my head hurt trying to follow what she's saying.
Somebody on CNN last night called her 'the Queen of the shining platitude'. Pretty well sums it up.

It will be interesting to see what shapes up.

I do worry that if Joe Biden says hello that he will be attacked for picking on her.

Ugh.

That quote generator is hilarious!

I'm such a sucker for hope of any kind. So I hope she fucks up so badly even Gwen Ifill will crack up laughing. I hope the Biden "gaff machine" will be under control, and he will be charming and smart. And I hope American is watching and actually cares what happens.

I'm at the 70-minute mark in the debate, and I find it excruciating to watch. She is not directly answering very many of the questions, but her naive folksiness and "Aw shucks"/"Golly gee" persona is probably going to cause the media to declare her the winner. She is better with the camera than Biden is, and in modern America where form matters so much more than content, she is doing too well tonight.

Even with all that said, I am proud of Biden's performance. He has been polite, hasn't been mean or exceedingly condescending. He is actually answering the questions... which probably isn't going to earn him many points.

Now at the 75-minute mark, she is mostly just endlessly rehashing sound bites. Like I said before, this is excruciating.

So what'd you think? I was very happy with Biden. Palin on the other hand, I don't deal so well with her belief that rules don't apply to McPalin campaign. No need to answer question asked, attack media to cover up her own ignorance, no need to speak to American people so they can make informed choices, no need to mention any specifics, just talk about "mavericks who will reform" and some nonsense about a six pack and hockey. Uggh. Why do they say they are going to help mid. class Americans? Have they listed even one way they will do such a thing? I prefer to keep some health insurance and some safety net and not wage war in place of diplomacy. As I read on another comment elsewhere tonight, I say "Thanks but no thanks" to McCain/Palin. Hope you're well btw, miss talking to you!!
