But stem cells? No.

Slouching Mom - thanks for your comment, and for confirming the anti-science attitude you are seeing in the schools. I don't have kids myself so am not on the front lines there. But from what I have read it is very different from when I was growing up in the 60's.

Tomcat, I can imagine Sputnik was fear-inspiring when it happened, given you were older than I was. I remember when I was 9 or 10 being very worried when the Chinese got the hydrogen bomb.

ROTFL about exploring the space between Bush's ears! I think that's one final frontier I could live without exploring though! It could be a very scary place! ;-)Mauigirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15529827915262851910noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34240686.post-63855089292284459842007-09-29T18:02:00.000-04:002007-09-29T18:02:00.000-04:00Maui, I share your interest in the exploration of ...Maui, I share your interest in the exploration of space, and that interest also stems back to Sputnik. I am so behind in my blog visits and will soon go on vacation, so I am very glad I came by to see this.

I read this article too and found it thought provoking in many ways. I was born in November, right after Sputnik and I got to thinking about what that meant in terms of the world I entered.

We live in such insane times. The fact that science is on the table as a matter of discussion... well, it blows my mind.

Really well put Mauigirl. If the Democrats manage to blow it, we could be entering a new Dark Age here.

Luckilhy there are other countries that are pursuing science. But it is a sin that the richest nation shouldn't be devoting as much of its resources as possible to this pursuit.

Mary Ellen, the way I look at it is, the religion of Capitalism disdains any career not devoted to producing the biggest profits. This means scientists, engineers, teachers, social workers, and anyone else not directly involved in making money, will never be the lucrative careers in this country. Ironically, in France, it is engineers that are revered and doctors don't do as well.

I'm not a Marxist but I think making free market Capitalism the national religion is unsustainable. There needs to be some control over unfettered profit. It's really ironic that the Right Wingers supposedly support "Christian values," when the Bible specifically says not to worship Mammon. But that's exactly what they do.Mauigirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15529827915262851910noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34240686.post-76996118027009401752007-09-27T14:41:00.000-04:002007-09-27T14:41:00.000-04:00I never thought I would see the day when Science w...I never thought I would see the day when Science was tossed off to the side in our country.
